Description

Hi Everyone :iconsatoshiwaveplz:

Wow I'm so sorry i'm not posting as many drawings as before. I'm going to start college soon, but I'll still try to draw often.
ANYWAYS, I FINALLY got to UPDATE my Andorra OC.
I created this OC back in 2013 and every year I update her, BUT NOW, I think this will be the final version.

Before I go into her character bio, I just want to say that this was drawn using:

===========================================
===========================================
(SORRY IT'S SO LONG!!!!!!!!)

Country Name: Principat d'Andorra | Principality of Andorra

Capital: Andorra la Vella

Languages: Catalan (officially), along with Spanish, French, and some Portuguese.

Government: Parliamentary Democracy | Co-Principality

Location: Europe | Pyrenees Mountains | Landlocked between Spain and France

Population: 85,293 (number may have changed)

Currency: Euro

Religion: no official religion, but the majority are Roman Catholic

Motto: “Virtus Unita Fortior” (“United Virtue is Stronger”)

Climate: alpine climate and continental climate, higher elevation means on average more snow in winter, lower humidity, and is slightly cooler in the summer.

Human Name: Jacqueline Ana-Sofia Petit | (Jah que lēēn) (rhymes with trampoline)

Gender: Female

Age Appearance: 23

Height: 5'7

Birthday: September 8

Hair Color: Brown | 2 curls to represent her co-principality with Spain and France

Clothing & Appearance:

Andorra's appearance is youthful because of her country's high life expectancy. Here eyes are light grey and here expressions are usually either happy or calm. No matter the season, Andorra wears two blue and red ribbon clips in her hair. Andorra's hair is brown and slightly messy at the bottom to represent Spain, but for the most part it is straight and well kept.

Summer Outfit: (Main Outfit)

In the summer, Andorra wears a white sleeveless vest with a yellow zipper. The vest has 3 colored rectangular army “ribbons” one red, one blue, one yellow. Underneath she wears a black sleeveless shirt with a small turtleneck. Her skirt is long and red. She doesn't wear leggings in the summer, but she does wear black gloves, and brown boots with black zippers.

Winter Outfit:

In the winter, Andorra wears a long white coat with a yellow zipper. The coat has 3 colored rectangular army “ribbons” one red, one blue, one yellow. Underneath she still wears a black sleeveless shirt with a small turtleneck. Her long skirt is red and has a black fur trim at the bottom. She wears light grey leggings in the winter and occasionally wears a grey scarf with yellow trims. She wears black gloves and brown boots with black zippers.

Personality: (WIP)

To Andorra, the security of her home and people are her top priority, so she tries to maintain peace and neutrality. Andorra takes council meetings very seriously especially if it affects her people, because of this, she can sometimes become very outspoken and passionate during such meetings. Andorra likes to be balanced when it comes to her Co-principality's. She has the tendency to panic when she's only ruled by one country, since her two fears are to disappear as a country and to go to war. Andorra will sometimes get what she wants by going to both of her co-princes. If one says NO, the other might say YES. Andorra can be brave at times by speaking her mind when necessary and practising civil disobedience. Andorra knows that she is not a strong country, so she prefers to fight smarter not harder, and thinks before she acts. Most of the time she just stays out of everyone else's business. When Andorra was younger, she was just a poor, simple, shy country that was isolated in the Pyrenees. She didn't really like to socialize with anyone but the Marca Hispanica and her co-princes, but as she grew, she became more open to meeting new people and new countries. Andorra enjoys simple activities that have to do with nature; like hiking, skiing, or just having a picnic in the lush valleys. Andorra's favorite flower is the Grandalla Narcissus, because the 6 petals represent her 6 parishes and the 2 yellow crowns in the center represent her 2 co-princes. Cattle and sheep are prominent in Andorra's home, but she enjoys spending the most time with her 2 lammergeiers; Ruben and Ruby (or Rubeno and Rubiana). When Andorra is tired she usually enjoys relaxing at Caldea (it's a giant thermal spa) Andorra can be romantic, since she was raised by two romantic countries, but she tries not to be over the top. When Andorra gets drunk, she can do some pretty wild things like that one time she declared war on Germany, but she will always clean her messes up. Andorra is a single lady and lives alone. She thinks it would be nice to someday have a family, but at the moment, she is happy being on her own. Andorra had some old habits like smuggling and smoking tobacco, but she has stepped away from that now. She still grows tobacco though. Andorra recently began collecting taxes under the order of her co-princes. She doesn't really like it, since she isn't the type of country/person to go against both her bosses, but the taxes are very low so she is able to tolerate it. Andorra overall is sweet, simple, and calm. At the moment, she has no intentions of becoming one of the bigger countries, since she thinks that the bigger a country gets, the more problems it faces.

Relations:

For the most part, Andorra's greatest relations are with France and Spain. In recent years Andorra has been extending it relations with other countries such as with the United states, Portugal etc.

Pet(s)/Companions/etc:

Andorra lives with some cattle and sheep, but she is most seen with 2 lammergeiers named Ruben and Ruby. Their real names are Rubeno and Rubiana, but Andorra only calls them that when she's angry at them. Ruben and Ruby are brother and sister with Ruben being the oldest. (More information about them will be posted in the future)

*side note- a male pyrenean chamois is sometimes seen around Andorra, but it tends to not like her very much. (this is due to the fact that chamois were hunted by humans so much that they became endangered; today they are no longer endangered)

HISTORY: (very detailed!)

Note- There is pre-history to Andorra, but most consider that “Ancient Andorra”, which I would consider as being the history to Andorra's mother. So, let's start with Charlemagne.

* In the past Charlemagne created these buffer states to keep the invading Moors from reaching France. These buffer states, all together, were know as the “Marca Hispánica”. (Andorra is the only surviving member of the Marca Hispánica) At the time there were about 4,000 to 6,000 people living in Andorra.

798A.D.- Urgell (and Andorra by default) became part of the Marca Hispanica

803A.D.- About 5,000 Andorrans helped Charlemagne to push back the invading Moors. Charlemagne, in order to show them his gratitude, granted them a charter known as the “Carta de Fundacio d'Andorra”, which granted them sovereignty. (The existence of this document is questioned by some historians, but no one's really sure since the charter is under lock and key)

814A.D.- After the death of the Charlemagne, Andorra was handed over to his grandson, Charles the Bald a.k.a the Count of Urgell.

834A.D.- Charles the Bald (Charles II) gave the valleys of Andorra to Sunifred I of Cerdanya, making him the new count of Urgell.

988A.D.- Borrell II a.k.a the Count of Urgell, gave 2 valleys of Andorra (Lória and Ordino) to the Bishop of Urgell, in exchange for some land in Cerdanya and Berga.

1007- Ermengol the 1st (Count of Urgell and Son of Borrell II), gave half of Andorra to The Bishop Sal·la of Urgell.

1095- Years passed, and there was now a new Bishop of Urgell (Ot) as well as a new Count of Urgell (Ermengol V). Bishop Ot of Urgell feared that Count Ermengol V would try to take back Andorra, so in 1095 the Bishop of Urgell asked the Lord of Caboet (a catalan nobleman) for help and protection. The two then signed, under oath, a declaration of co-sovereignty over Andorra.

1133- Count Ermengol VI of Urgell handed, “all the rights that [had] or [may be had] in the future to the Valleys of Andorra,” over to Bishop Pere Berenguer, “and ordered the inhabitants of the Valleys to swear fidelity to the bishop and his successors, and respect all the duties of good vassals” (Geography and History of the Principality of Andorra, Section 3, andorramania.com). Basically Count Ermengol VI of Urgell handed over any and all rights of Andorra to Bishop Pere of Urgell.

1223 or 1226?- Robert Bernard II married Ermessenda I. Together the two became the Count and Countess of Foix, making Robert heir to the Lord of Caboet. From this point until 1278, their would be conflict between the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgell as to who would get Andorra.

1278- Pere II of Catalunya forced the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgell to reach an agreement. With the mediation of Aragon, the count and bishop settled on becoming Co-princes, and signing the, Paréage of Andorra, on September 8, 1278. The Paréage states that Andorra shall be ruled equally by the Count of Foix (France) and The Bishop of Urgell (Spain). Andorra also had to pay an annual tribute or “Questia”. (Fun Fact: To this day, Andorra is still the only Co-principality in existence.)

1396- Andorra was briefly annexed into the Crown of Aragon

1419- The Andorrans petitioned for a Council of the Land, which would act as parliament and deal with local issues. The petition was accepted by their co-princes and the council was created.

1505- Germaine of Foix married Ferdinand V of Castile (aka Ferdinand II of Aragon)

1512- With the marriage of Germaine and Ferdinand, the Crown of Aragon once more annexed Andorra into it's own lands.

1589- Henry the III of Navarre (who was also the Count of Foix at the time), ascended to the French Throne as Henry IV.

1607- With Henry ascending to the French throne, a royal edict was made. This meant that the Count of Foix would no longer be a co-prince. Instead it was changed to that, “The Head of the French state” (the french king) and Bishop of Urgell would be the Co-princes of Andorra.

1793- With the French Revolution and the overthrowing of the Monarchy, the revolutionaries refused to accept Andorra's Questia. They took it as simple remnants of feudalism, and renounced their rights over Andorra. From 1793 up to 1806, Andorra would be solely under Spanish Rule.

1794- During the French Revolutionary Wars, French troops were sent to Urgell and requested passage through Andorra. Andorra refused and representatives from Andorra convinced General Chabert, or “Chabret”, to renounce the operation. Reason: General Chabert knew that his army was perfectly capable of defeating Andorra's small militia (500 men), but he also knew that Andorra could act as a supply line and be essential in a guerrilla warfare against Urgell.

1806- By now most of the states belonging to the Marca Hispánica had been consumed by France and Spain. This troubled Andorra, because they feared that by being solely under Spanish rule they would also lose their independence and be consumed by Spain. The people of Andorra decided to make a petition so that France would once again become a Co-prince. Napoleon Bonaparte accepted the petition and Andorra recovered its Co-Principality.

1803 to 1815- Andorra remained neutral during the Napoleonic Wars.

1812- Napoleon divided Catalonia into 4 departments, each having a prefect/capital:

  1. Department of Ter (Prefect: Girona)

  2. Department of Montserrat (Prefect: Lérida)

  3. Department of Bocas del Ebro (Prefect: Barcelona)

  4. Department of Ségre (Prefect: Puigcerda )

Napoleon had specified that he wanted Andorra to be included into the Department of Ségre, however, about a month later several Andorran men marched over to the Prefect of Puigcerda and convinced them to “forget” to include the tiny principality into the Department of Ségre. So nothing was ever really official. ((Rumor has it that the Andorran men were able to convince them with the point of their pitchforks)) Napoleon did eventually find out about this, but by then he was too preoccupied with more important matters.

1833 to 1876- Many people seek refuge in Andorra during the Carlist wars in Spain. Many rebels had forces in the Pyrenees. Intruders, mostly Carlists, were ejected back into Spain by the Andorran Militia.

1870- The Co-princes of Andorra were changed from: the French King and Bishop of Urgell to “The President of France and Bishop of Urgell.”

1880- “The Battle of the Casino”: the Bishop of Urgell supported a French gambling syndicate in an attempt to set up operation in Escaldes. Bribes were made and a debate was sparked in the Council of Andorra (since they had to vote on whether or not to approve it). The debate got so heated to the point of rage, that Spain began to protest and become forceful. A French battalion was sent in to keep the peace. Andorra refused the gambling scheme, because they didn't want to give up their independence for material gain, nor did they want to make it seem like as if they could be easily bribed or “bought out.” In the the end, the gambling scheme was relocated instead to Monaco.

1893- Despite the opposition of Spain, Andorra got it's first telegraph to the outside world on the French border. (Ax les Thermes)

1899- Andorra builds road to French frontier at Pas de la Casa, and rebuilds it in 1911. Before, you would have had to travel through the Gran Valira River to get to Andorra. More specifically, the east branch of the Valira river.

1905- Bishop of Urgell convinces Spanish government to build road to Andorra. Before, you had to travel through the Gran Valira River to get to Andorra. More specifically, the north branch of the Valira river.

1910 to 1911- Road from Andorra to France was ruined by Spring floods in 1910, but was rebuilt in 1911.

1914- WW1: Andorra declares war against Germany, but Andorra doesn't do anything and kind of forgets about it until 1958.

1924- French letter Carrier, Miquel Farre, introduces skiing to Andorra. It snowed abundantly that year and Soldeu's postman, Miquel Farré, decided to exchange his snowshoes for long pieces of wood he saw being used by the inhabitants of the French village of Porta, where he went once a week to pick up mail. When the people of Soldeu saw Miquel on these strange pieces of wood attached to his feet, they were amazed. His fellow postmen were not slow in copying him, and skis arrived in Andorra.

1927- Andorra established a Spanish Postal service.

1929- The General Council of Andorra protests the Spanish “seizure” of the posts to France (Spain didn't want Andorra to officially establish a postal service with France). France obtained an amendment from the “Universal Postal Union Convention” which allowed it to operate a postal service in Andorra as well.

April 1933- The Journey to Male Suffrage: A group of young men stormed the Casa de les Valls and forced the General council to agree to universal male suffrage, they wanted to be able to vote. Despite this victory, the General Council members changed their minds and planed to not submit the agreement to the Co-princes. Lucky for the young male rebels, there was an organization of Andorran expatriates in Barcelona who sprang into action and threatened to kidnap the general council if they went back on the agreement. Three weeks later, the expatriates and the young rebel group joined together and forced the council to open to the public. That day, for the first time in Andorran History, a young man who was not head of a family, was able to address the council of a bunch of older men. A few days later, the rebel leader, Andres Masso, demanded that the French and Spanish Co-princes renounce their claims over Andorra. He stated, “Nothing short of independence will do.”

June 1933 – The head of the General Council, the Syndic, was not impressed by what Mr. Masso had said and Masso was dismissed by the parliament. The general council refused to recognize the dismissal, despite the demands of the French president that they desist. So now, there was this struggle between France and the Andorran people. The French would sometimes send gendarmes, and the Andorrans practiced civil disobedience by blockading the parliament building with mules and other livestock. Spain was generally supportive of the Andorrans, but had little influence since it is the Bishop of Urgell and not the Spanish Government who co-rule Andorra. The protesting went on for quite a while, and the Andorrans were about to bring the case before the League of Nations, but then the tobacco harvest started and the protesting was put on hold.

September 1933- The End to the Journey of Suffrage: Finally, the Andorrans got their way and young males were allowed to vote for the first time. Andorra, Spain, and France settled their differences and before the end of the year, Andorra was once again peaceful. (So yeah, suffrage is very important to the Andorrans)

1933 to 1934- “King Boris I” : This year was just as crazy as the previous year. By now many people had heard of the unrest going on in Andorra and were offering large amounts of money for a title of nobility. The General Council would always reject the offers, stating that Andorra was a principality, not a kingdom. For several months (since 1933), Boris Skossyreff (a russian man), had been staying in Andorra. His citizenship had been approved by the General Coucil. He proposed to them that he become the first King of Andorra. Boris' right-hand man, Pere Torres Ribas, convinced all but one member of the council to accept Boris as their new king. After what happened in 1933, France decided to just stay out of it, but the one council member who wasn't convinced, ran off to tell the Bishop of Urgell about Boris becoming king. The Bishop of Urgell was not at all happy and Boris even managed to make things worse by declaring war against the Bishop. Boris was arrested by spanish troops and imprisoned for a while in Madrid, until he was exiled to Portugal (he was also arrested in Portugal for not having his papers in order). After that, not much was heard from him. A detachment of the French army was sent to Andorra to, “keep the peace”, while re-elections for the General Council took place since the council members who voted YES on having a king, were booted out. I'm guessing the one person who said NO and went to tell the bishop, kept his job.

1936 to 1940- Spanish Civil War: French troops were sent to Andorra to protect them from any Spanish civil war problems and influences. During the Spanish civil war, Andorra took in many refugees escaping from Spain, and Andorra was used to smuggle French goods into Spain.

1939 to 1945- WWII: Andorra remained neutral during this war. With the German invasion of France, the flow of smuggling and refugees get's reversed. Refugees escape to Andorra (and to other places as well), and Spanish goods get smuggled to France through Andorra. In 1942, German troops stopped at the Andorran border where their commander informed Andorran officials that he had been ordered to respect Andorra's territorial integrity. Three reasons for respecting Andorra's borders were because:

  1. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco persuaded and insisted that the Germans not invade Andorra

  2. Andorra had a history of being good for smuggling items

  3. Andorra could have served as a refuge for fallen soldiers

1946 to 1954- Radio Andorra: Radio Andorra owner, Jacques Tremoulet, was sentenced to death for acts of collaboration. The charges stemmed from his friendship with Pierre Laval and his meeting with the Germans in an attempt to preserve ownership of his other stations, notably Radio Toulouse which was closed. Trémoulet’s French properties, most notably Radio Andorra’s Paris advertising offices, were seized. Radio Andorra’s French advertising revenues were cut off. The French Government began jamming Radio Andorra’s signal in 1948. The station’s signal was rendered quasi-inaudible in France for nearly a year. In 1949, Radio Andorra owner Jacques Trémoulet’s conviction for collaboration is reversed on appeal. Trémoulet had taken refuge in Spain and Switzerland throughout his prosecution. The French government ceased to jam Radio Andorra's signal. Two years later in 1951, The French government chartered the Andorradio Company to compete with Radio Andorra. In 1953 France closed the border with Andorra for a little while in an effort to pressure Andorra into closing Radio Andorra. In 1954, Radio Andorra was permitted to open an advertising office in Paris, and the french gave up on trying to silence the radio station.

1958: Andorra realized that they were “technically” still at war with Germany, and they immediately signed a peace treaty.

1970- Woman in Andorra finally get the right to vote. The female road to suffrage was no where near as dramatic as the male journey to suffrage in 1933.

1978- The six parishes of Andorra were expanded to seven, with the establishment of the parish of Escaldes-Engordany.

1982- The Govern: Andorra gets it first executive branch of government and the head of the “Govern” was chosen by the General Council (Council of the land).

1989- Andorra's national flag is created. It is blue, yellow and red, with the coat of arms in the center.

1993- After a referendum, Andorra's first Constitution is adopted. The powers of the princes, the French and the Spanish, were reduced, and Andorra became a member of the United Nations. France and Spain established their embassies in the country.

2009- During the worldwide financial crisis, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, and co-prince of Andorra, placed himself at the helm of an international crusade to clamp down on tax evasion. Mr. Sarkozy told Andorra to fall in line if it did not want to be ostracized, even threatened in early 2009 to drop his title as co-prince. Spain also supported that Andorra begin implying income taxes. For decades, Andorra enjoyed the luxury of being a Tax Haven, but ended up complying and signing agreements with it's two Co-princes and other countries.

2013- Andorra announced that it would begin to introduce an income tax. Many Andorrans are both worried and curious to see what this new income tax will lead to.
